(ICD-9 # 290.10 and DSM-IV # 290.10)

Our office receives one type of patient who does not come on his/her own but is brought in by family or caretakers. These are generally much older patients suffering from memory loss and thinking disturbance. The causes are multiple but most commonly today the term "Alzheimer's" is used. Treatment is management with some improvement of recent memory. However the main concern is adequate day-to-day support, either by someone living at home or placed in the appropriate care facility. Currently newer medications are about to be released that have promise of markedly helping severe memory loss.
