Generalized Anxiety Disorder Treatment by New York Psychiatrist

(ICD-9 # 300.02 and DSM-IV # 300.02)

One of the most common problems brought to our office is anxiety - Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). The patient worries excessively about unreal irrational situations and very often experiences extreme reactions called panic states. During these most uncomfortable moments our patients have reported rapid heartbeat, ice-cold fingers, extreme headaches, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, diarrhea often with abdominal pain, and extreme sweatiness is often present. There may be trembling and frequently such patients feel tired most of the time and have trouble sleeping at night. Our patients have done well on appropriate treatment: combination of the proper medication and psychotherapy explaining the rationalization of what is truly risk in one's life and what is actually imaginary. We have also seen patients having remarkable results in reducing all the bodily symptoms noted above with biofeedback, a specialized technique that teaches the mind to no longer set off explosive bodily attacks. Our patients with GAD do remarkably well with fairly rapid responses.
