Eating Disorders Treatment by New York Psychiatrist

An obstetrician warned a 25-year-old pregnant woman with the eating disorder Bulimia — namely compulsive vomiting — that both her health and the baby's health were at major risk if she continued throwing up daily. Because of the pregnancy, eating disorder medication was deferred. A single session of eating disorder hypnotherapy proved effective. "Doctor, thank you! I no longer have to vomit, and I feel so much better."

Patients consult us complaining of insatiable hunger with a compulsive need to eat huge amounts of food. Other patients, mainly women, come in with the habit of binging and then followed by purging- vomiting the immediate food taken in- carry a diagnosis of Bulimia. Such patients often have a number of other mental problems as well. Treatment of Bulimia and Anorexia Nervosa must be highly specialized- sometimes medication, often analytic type of therapy understanding background traumas. Biofeedback with control of the body reactions through mental training, and specifically hypnotherapy has been helpful with a number of our patients. These conditions are most serious. One of our patients, a young woman three months pregnant, reported constant purging. Such a condition can lead to abnormalities in the blood system that can well affect the fetus. Fortunately three sessions of hypnotherapy eliminated the vomiting aspect thereby ensuring a healthy pregnancy and a sound baby.
